Kickstart 2021 at Afrekete Gold Coast Festival Near Currumbin Beach

Get ready for good vibes on the beachfront this summer when Afrekete Festival takes over Tugun on the cool Southern Gold Coast, offering live music and dance performances, workshops and lots more to showcase and celebrate Afro-Cuban culture and the evolution of Cuban dance!

Whether you know your way around a dance floor or own two left feet, watch and learn from some of Australia’s most esteemed Cuban dance performers and tutors - whisking you on a journey through Arara, Bantu and Merengue Franco-Haitian dance styles - with live Afrekete percussionists providing the beat and festival spirit to get your hips moving.

Just some of the performers, tutors and special guests at Afrekete Afro-Cuban Festival 2021 will include Adrian Medina Skull, Israel Ortiz Castellano, Greydis Montero Liranza and Christina Monneron. The festival will take place on the Tugun beachfront, at Tugun Village Community Centre, complete with lively opening and closing evening ceremonies that you simply won’t want to miss.

Other activities and events will include an authentic Cuban dinner, authentic Babalawo readings, plus a Saturday night party under the stars!

Here’s a summary of what to expect on the Afrekete 2021 program:

• Friday night - Official Opening Ceremony and A Night in Havana Cabaret Showcase
• Saturday - Afro-Cuban Song & Ceremony followed by Arara, Bantu and Merengue Franco-Haitiano workshops and a Yoruba dance performance
• Sunday - Warm Up Dance of the Dragon, Rumba Styling, Bata Drum Masterclass and Closing Ceremony

Afrekete by the Sea comes to Tugun Beach for a full weekend from January 22 to January 24. Ticket prices are $222 for the full weekend, $97 for under 18s (full weekend) and $55 for Friday night only.
