The Stinson Walk occurs once a year in autumn, and offers passionate trekkers and bushwalkers the chance to experience Bernard O’Reilly’s 1937 mission in which he located a fallen Stinson Model A airliner along with two wounded survivors in Lamington National Park, Queensland.

For his efforts, Bernard O’Reilly is now hailed as an Australian national hero, and each year, the Stinson Walk - presented by O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat - commends his courage with a group trek through Lamington National Park in which his every step is retraced and recreated.

Suitable for bushwalkers and experienced hikers, the Stinson Walk takes participants deep into Lamington Park - through the Border Track, the Albert River Circuit, and Point Lookout - to the exact location of the fallen Stinson Model A, where some remains of the airliner as well as graves of the less fortunate passengers can be viewed and observed.

The Stinson Walk measures 37-kilometres to the crash site, which takes approximately 8 hours to reach. Once at the crash site, participants will stop for a short history talk, before following the same route back to O’Reilly’s Resort.

As well as an unforgettable historical experience, the Stinson Walk is a rewarding rainforest hike in which participants will be treated to Lamington National Park’s dense rainforest and vegetation, incredible elevated views, as well as its diverse population of native flora and fauna. For seasoned bushwalkers and adventurers, it’s an iconic walk that will be remembered for a lifetime.

You can take part in the first Stinson Walk this 2019 from May 11 to May 13. The weekend-long program will involve a group briefing and dinner, before embarking on the walk on the second day.

At Sanctuary Lake, our Currumbin accommodation on the Southern Gold Coast puts you within driving distance of the Stinson Walk at Lamington National Park. For more information, make sure to visit Sanctuary Lake Apartments.
